The Cleo Redd Fisher Museum is inviting volunteers to join in two Volunteer Workdays at the Copus Hill Historic Site on Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, April 30, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day.
Recently acquired by the museum, Copus Hill marks the site of an 1812 conflict between settlers and Native Americans and remains an important historical and commemorative site. The museum is working to improve accessibility and interpretation of the site in preparation for future archaeological surveys, walking paths, and educational signage.
To begin that effort, these workdays will focus on site cleanup, including: • Cutting and removing fallen trees • Clearing brush and invasive species • Cleaning litter • Prepping the flowerbed and monument for restoration
Volunteers will be provided with lunch and drinks each day. All participants will be required to sign a waiver before beginning work. Please dress appropriately for outdoor manual labor, including gloves (don't worry, if you don't have gloves we will have some available). You may wish to bring a lawn chair for breaks, as there are no benches at the site.
The museum will provide basic tools and equipment, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own if available—particularly chainsaws, high-power weedeaters (for brush), shovels, and hedge loppers.
Please note: there are no restrooms on-site, but public facilities are available nearby at Charles Mill Dam.
