Journey into the Land of the Rising Sun

Discover a country where ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity exist side by side. Our journey begins in the lively neighborhoods of Osaka and winds through Kyoto’s timeless temples, the poignant memorials of Hiroshima, the storybook charm of Miyajima, and the buzzing energy of Tokyo. Along the way, we’ll stroll through historic districts and bamboo forests, marvel at castles and shrines, ride the sleek Shinkansen, and taste everything from elegant kaiseki dinners to sizzling street food. This is more than a tour—it’s a chance to experience the spirit of Japan through its culture, history, cuisine, and people.

Itinerary

June 3 – Osaka Arrive in Osaka and transfer to the Dotonbori district, known for its bright neon lights, bustling canals, and endless food stalls that have earned the city its reputation as Japan’s “kitchen.”

June 4 – Kyoto Travel to Kyoto, the former imperial capital and heart of Japan’s traditional culture. Walk beneath the thousands of vermilion gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine, admire the Zen gardens of Tenryuji and the towering bamboo of Arashiyama, ride the nostalgic Sagano Scenic Railway, and marvel at the golden splendor of Kinkakuji Temple. Cap the day with a welcome dinner.

June 5 – Kyoto & Nara Take a day trip to Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital, where you’ll see the monumental Great Buddha inside Todaiji Temple. Try your hand at a dango cooking class before returning to Kyoto to visit Sanjusangendo, a hall lined with 1,001 statues of Kannon. End the day with a tea ceremony.

June 6 – Kurashiki & Hiroshima Board the train for Hiroshima, stopping en route at Kurashiki, famous for its preserved Bikan Old Town with Edo-period warehouses and canals. In Hiroshima, we recommend the city’s signature dish, okonomiyaki, for dinner.

June 7 – Miyajima Island Reflect at Hiroshima’s Peace Museum and Park, then ferry to nearby Miyajima, long revered as a sacred island. Visit Itsukushima Shrine, with its torii gate appearing to float on the water, and explore the quiet temples of the forested slopes, including Daisho-in.

June 8 – Himeji & Nagoya Ride the Shinkansen to Himeji to visit Japan’s most spectacular feudal fortress, Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Nagoya, where an evening street food tour introduces you to the city’s lively culinary scene.

June 9 – Nagoya & Tokyo Spend the morning at the Toyota Commemorative Museum (subject to change), which traces the company’s roots from weaving looms to global auto making. Travel onward to Tokyo, Japan’s bustling capital, and experience the energy of Shibuya in the evening.

June 10 – Tokyo Explore Tokyo’s contrasts: the forested Meiji Shrine, colorful Takeshita Dori youth fashion street, luxury boutiques of Ginza, and the lively temple district of Asakusa with Sensoji, Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple. Afterward, take in the nightlife on a guided tour of Shinjuku.

June 11 – Kamakura Choose an optional excursion to Kamakura, a former shogunal capital filled with temples and history, or spend the day exploring Tokyo at your own pace before gathering together for a farewell dinner.

June 12 – Departure Enjoy a free morning before transferring to the airport for your return flight to the United States.

This tour involves full days of sightseeing on foot, often over uneven surfaces, steps, and sloped paths at temples, shrines, and historic districts. Travelers will also navigate busy train stations and public transport. A moderate level of fitness and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

2. A non-refundable reservation fee is required at time of registration. Reservation fees can be paid by credit card with no additional fee, however all remaining payments should be made by check, payable to CRF Museum, or be charged an additional 3% credit card processing fee.

3. Minimum of 12 guests required to fulfill trip. Spots will be booked in order of online registration and payment received. Guests will be notified if trip reaches minimum.

4. All guests are responsible for ensuring passport status and meeting all travel requirements. The CRF Museum and our travel partners cannot be held liable if your trip is impacted by health, legal, or other issues out of our control.

5. Cancellation, minus reservation fee, is only refundable up to the advertised deposit deadline. After the deadline all payments are non-refundable. In the event of nationwide covid-19 lockdowns, natural disasters, war, etc. the CRF Museum reserves the right to cancel the entirety of the trip after this deadline. In the unlikely event of an emergency cancelation, the museum will refund the full amount possible according to agreements with our travel partners.

6. We encourage guests to purchase travel insurance or use a credit card with automatic coverage when purchasing airfare. CRF Museum and travel partners cannot be held liable for any loss of funds due to termination or changes to your trip.

Itinerary

June 19 Arrive in Dublin and meet your driver-guide before traveling west across Ireland, passing through scenic countryside en route to Clonmacnoise, a 6th-century monastic site on the River Shannon. Continue to Galway City, known for its medieval roots and lively cultural scene, where you’ll spend the night in the heart of town.

June 20 Explore the wild beauty of Connemara, a region of rugged mountains, lakes, and remote villages. Visit Glengowla Mines and enjoy a sheepdog demonstration before touring Kylemore Abbey and taking in stunning views throughout Connemara National Park, returning to Galway for the evening.

June 21 Travel south along Ireland’s dramatic Atlantic coast, taking in the unique landscape of The Burren and the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher. Continue through charming villages and the picturesque town of Adare before arriving in Killarney for an overnight stay.

June 22 Journey along the scenic Ring of Kerry, passing through charming villages and coastal landscapes. Enjoy a traditional pub lunch and a guided walk in Derrynane National Park, before returning to Killarney via mountain passes and lakeside views.

June 23 Depart Killarney and travel east toward Dublin, stopping for a guided tour and tasting at the Jameson Distillery in Midleton and a visit to the historic Rock of Cashel. Arrive in Dublin for an overnight stay in the heart of the city.

June 24 Explore Ireland’s capital city with visits to Trinity College to see the famed Book of Kells, EPIC: The Irish Emigration Museum, and the iconic Guinness Storehouse—where your tour ends with a pint and panoramic views of Dublin from the Gravity Bar.

June 25 Transfer to the airport for your return flight. Depending on your departure time, use the morning to explore the city on your own.

Guests should be comfortable walking on uneven surfaces, navigating stairs, and standing for extended periods during guided tours. While the pace is generally relaxed, a reasonable level of mobility and stamina is needed to fully enjoy the experience. Ashley is an educator from Indiana. She’s passionate about connecting with locals and is continually humbled by the opportunities travel brings. Her favorite moments are often the unexpected—watching the sunrise over the Nile, running along Havana’s Malecón, or stepping into King Tut’s tomb. Traveling with the museum has made experiences like these not only possible, but unforgettable.

Note: Group Leaders assist with logistics and serve as a liaison between travelers and guides. They are volunteers, not museum staff, and do not serve as tour guides or porters.

Sweden: A Journey Through History and Culture

Step into Sweden, where water, stone, and sky shape a landscape rich with history, tradition, and quiet beauty. In Stockholm, a city spread across islands, medieval streets wind through Gamla Stan while royal palaces, cathedral interiors, and waterfront views reflect centuries of cultural and political life. It’s a place where the past feels present—woven into daily routines, architecture, and the rhythms of the city itself.

Beyond the capital, the story deepens. In Uppsala and the surrounding countryside, Sweden’s earliest roots come into view. Ancient burial mounds rise from the landscape at Gamla Uppsala, marking a place once central to pre-Christian belief and early kingship. Here, myth, archaeology, and history intersect in a setting that feels both grounded and timeless.

Throughout the journey, Sweden reveals itself not through spectacle, but through atmosphere—quiet streets, open landscapes, and a culture shaped by resilience, tradition, and connection to place. Itinerary

September 11 – Arrival Arrive in Stockholm and meet for a guided walking tour introducing the area around our hotel and the city’s historic core. We’ll visit Stockholm Cathedral before continuing into Gamla Stan, the city’s Old Town, where narrow cobblestone streets, the Royal Palace, and the Nobel Prize Museum highlight centuries of Swedish history. Along the way, we’ll enjoy a tasting of traditional fried herring.

September 12 – Maritime History & Swedish Traditions Travel to Djurgården, Stockholm’s museum island, for a visit to the Vasa Museum, home to a remarkably preserved 17th-century warship built as a symbol of Sweden’s power. From there, enjoy a scenic walk along the waterfront before continuing to Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum. Here, historic buildings, farmsteads, and traditional crafts bring Sweden’s cultural history to life, including its connections to emigration and modern development. The afternoon allows time to explore further or return to the city at your own pace.

September 13 - Vaxholm & the Archipelago Travel by ferry through the Stockholm archipelago, passing islands and coastal landscapes on the way to Vaxholm, often called the “Capital of the Archipelago.” Explore this picturesque seaside town on a guided walking tour, with time to enjoy a traditional Swedish fika—coffee and cinnamon rolls—at a local café. After returning to Stockholm, discover the city’s subway system, known for its striking artwork, with visits to several of its most notable stations.

September 14 – Uppsala & Sweden’s Early Foundations Travel by private coach to Uppsala for a day exploring one of Sweden’s most historically significant regions. Begin at Gamla Uppsala, where ancient burial mounds and a historic church mark an important Viking-age ceremonial site. Continue into modern Uppsala to visit key landmarks including the Royal Castle, the university library, and Uppsala Cathedral, along with the gardens of Carl Linnaeus. After time for lunch on your own, the day concludes with a visit to Venngarn Castle for a gin tasting before returning to Stockholm.

September 15 – Royal Stockholm & Drottningholm Palace Begin the day with a guided visit to Stockholm City Hall, a landmark of Swedish architecture and the site of the Nobel Prize banquet. From there, travel by boat to Drottningholm Palace, the residence of the Swedish royal family and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the palace, its gardens, and the Chinese Pavilion, with time for lunch before returning to Stockholm by boat.

September 16 – Artipelag & Contemporary Expression Travel into the Stockholm archipelago to visit Artipelag, where art and nature come together in a striking coastal setting. Enjoy a guided walk through the outdoor exhibition spaces before experiencing an immersive installation dedicated to Alphonse Mucha, blending visual art, sound, and atmosphere. Return to Stockholm in the afternoon.

September 17 – Departure Enjoy free time in Stockholm before making your departure.

This tour includes a moderate amount of walking, typically averaging a few miles per day. Much of this takes place on city streets, including uneven surfaces such as cobblestones in historic areas like Gamla Stan. Participants should be comfortable walking for extended periods, standing during guided visits, and navigating stairs and varied terrain. The pace is manageable, with regular breaks, but a reasonable level of mobility is recommended to fully enjoy the experience.

If a participant cancels and we are able to fill the vacated space with another traveler, the CRF Museum will refund the amount recoverable based on payments received and any unrecoverable expenses. In the event of circumstances beyond our control — including but not limited to nationwide lockdowns, natural disasters, war, government actions, or other emergencies — the CRF Museum reserves the right to cancel the tour. In such cases, the museum will refund the maximum amount recoverable according to agreements with our travel partners.

3. Minimum Participation Requirement A minimum of 10 participants is required for the tour to operate. Registrations are confirmed in the order payment is received. Guests will be notified once the minimum has been met. If the minimum number of participants is not reached, the tour will be canceled and all payments made will be fully refunded.

4. Itinerary Changes While we intend to follow the published itinerary, schedules, accommodations, transportation, and activities are subject to change due to circumstances beyond our control. Any adjustments will be made with care and in the best interest of the group.

Any such services are separate from the CRF Museum and may result in advisors receiving commission. The CRF Museum is not responsible for independently arranged services.

8. Travel Agreement & Waiver All participants are required to complete and sign a Travel Agreement and Waiver Release prior to departure. Documents will be provided following registration. Participation is contingent upon receipt of these signed forms.
